586 Rev up for Sunseeker Rally 2011

Rallye Sunseeker International 25/26 February 2011

The Dulux Trade MSA British Teams Rally Championship has another dimension in the form of Team C2R2 Max ahead of tomorrow’s first round, Rallye Sunseeker International.

The team, which comprises Irish drivers Mark Donnelly/Barry McNulty and BRC newcomers Desi Henry/John Rowan, registered before the close of entries last week. But Belfast’s Charles Hurst Motors, which supplies parts and on event services for the Citroën Racing Trophy, has worked hard to gain additional support from Citroën Racing in France before announcing its plans.

This addition means four teams will compete for the honour, M-Sport Ford, Autosport Technology ad 586 Sports having already confirmed their inclusion.

M-Sport Ford will field a two car Fiesta R2 team comprising Craig Breen/Gareth Roberts and John MacCrone/Stuart Louden, while Autosport Technology has a truly international field of Renault Twingos.

Finnish crew Mikko Pajunen/Jani Salo are joined by Estonians Siim Plangi/Marek Sarapuu in their assault on the Teams title, both drivers new to the surprisingly quick little French cars.

586 Sports will field just one car for the time being, 2010 BRC Challenge champions Callum Black/Paul Wakely pitting a single Super 1600 Suzuki Swift against the Fords, Citroëns and Renaults. The team has another car in build but reckon it will be the first asphalt event before it could join the fray.

Rallye Sunseeker International kicks off on Poole Quay today (Friday) evening at 18:30 before eleven stages to the north of Bournemouth on Saturday.

PODIUM FOR MILLERS MAN BLACK!

Last weekend saw,19 year old rally driver, Callum Black and Co-driver Paul Wakely begin their 2011 Dulux Trade British Rally Championship Campaign, on the Sunseeker Rally based in Bournemouth.

Callum who was debuting his new 2011 Millers Oils livery with his black Speedline Corse wheels, got off to a steady start in what was only his second rally in his new S1600 Suzuki Swift.

By Stage 4 Callum had worked his way to 3rd Position, behind the two Renault Twingos. Back at service, 586 Sports performed a routine service and Callum went out to do the second loop of stages. Callum found he was still struggling for traction and had a couple of ‘moments’ on his braking when the car failed to find grip – which was caught by Sky Sports Cameras, almost taking out Sky TVs’ commentator – Roobie Head!

After competing the middle loop of stages the Brian James Trailers backed driver, evaluted his position and decided that the Twingo’s had stretched too larger margin to claw back the time, but wanted to stay neat and consistant to prevent Craig Breens charge to the podium.

Callum managed to take time out of Craig Breen in the final loop whilst the Renault Twingos fought for the lead. Callum managed to keep the gap and bring the car home in 3rd.

Callum comments:

“The Sunseeker was a very tricky rally, with extremely slippy conditions in places. Some places cut up quite badly which didn’t allow me to take my racing line sometimes. We probably also should have ran the narrower tyres to get maximum traction as we lacked grip throught the day on both braking and getting traction through the wheels. However, we secured a podium, which puts good solid points on the board and means I have something to build on for the Bulldog Rally in April.

.The Bulldog should be a lot better, a rally that I’m really looking forward to, the stages suit my driving style and flow really nicely. Hopefully the tyres will work better as it’s more gravel based as opposed to the Sunseeker which was quite a clay based surface. “

CALLUM’S ALL BLACK!

19 year old rally driver, Callum Black will begin his first 2011 Dulux Trade British Rally Championship Campaign this weekend. The youngster who was selected as a Millers Oils Rising Star in 2010 has extended the sponsorship into this season with a fantastic full car livery.

Another supporter of Callums’ 2011 rallying campaign comes in the form of Brian James Trailers, who have continued after his Championship success of 2010. In addition to the renewed sponsorship deals, Callum has new partners in Speedline Corse who will supply Callum some stunning black Speedline wheels for the 2011 season.

Callum will be scoring points for the 586 Sports team, who have registered for the 2011 British Rally Championship Teams award. His family run outfit will be up against the likes of M-Sport (Ford), Autosport Technology (Renault) and Citroen Racing.

Callum is hoping for a solid result to secure some decent points on the board and get back ‘into the groove’.

Callum comments:

“2011 looks to be a very exciting year! The Sunseeker Rally will be a good season opener, so I can get back into the groove and get some points on the board. I haven’t had much time in the car since the Trackrod in September and with university exams / assignments in the run up to the rally it’s all hands on deck! I’ve still only done 1 rally in this car, so it’s still very much a learning process, but one that I look forward to!

The F2 (Front Wheel Drive Category) is very competitive in 2011, but ultimately it would nice to be challenging for the title. It’s great to have Millers Oils and Brian James Trailers on board again for 2011. I really feel it will be a great deal mutually for all parties, I’m intending on making the most of all the opportunities and developing as a driver.”

Callum Wins Hankook Prize Drive Fund

Callum has been selected as the 2011 Hankook Prize Drive winner! The prize fund was open to candidates under the age of 26 competing in all of the National Hankook backed championships.

After 2 successful seasons in the Hankook Welsh National Championship, Callum put forward his presentation after being selected in the final four, with fellow competitors Alex Allingham, Garry Pearson and David Wilson. Callum was then selected as the winner following a decision from a panel of 4 Hankook representatives.

Callum commented:

“When Andy Kelly rang me up and told me the good news, I was overwhelmed! To be selected as the winner of such a prestigious award and to gain the significant financial backing, is huge! I want to thank everyone involved in the scheme, from Andy Kelly to David Evison and Gwyn Reynolds Jones who all helped me throughout the 2010 with my driving development with the 2010 Hankook and Colin McRae vision scheme. 2011 is really exciting, I can’t wait to talk to Mike Pattison (Hankook Tyres) and look at our 2011 Programme. It’s moved my career to the next level. Thank you.”
