Up and coming British driver, Callum Black took to his first ever asphault event, competing in the Jim Clark challenge rally in kelso. Callum and co-driver Paul Wakely had a minor downer, as they crashed on the shakedown stage! Callums first ever crash in a rally car, obviously knocking his confidence and ruining his chances of getting any decent runs in prior to the rally start.

Once the 586 team repaired the car, Callum took to the opening stage a 1.5 mile trip around the centre of Duns town centre, recording a 4th fastest stage time. Callum headed into his first major test to tarmac, on a 15 mile stage which saw the youngster 5th fastest.

The final stage of the night was in pitch black darkness, so on went the lamp pod and Callum set a fantastic 3rd fastest stage time, half a second off 2nd fastest.

Back in the safety of his bed, Callum knew he had to push for 2nd after lying 4th at the half way point. Callum was 2nd quickest on the opening stage on Saturday morning, moving up to 2nd overall in the rally. Callum went one better by taking a fastest stage time, beating the likes of Richard Archer in his S1600 corsa. Callum kept a cool head through the final stage, catching Cunningham for a second time and climbing the BRC Challenge table to first Overall.

Callum commented:

“Wow, what a weekend! With no tarmac experience and the cars first time on tarmac, I really wasn’t expecting such a succesful weeked! After Fridays drama crashing on the shakedown, my confidence was at an all time low, but Fridays stages lifted my confidence back up and I simply loved Saturdays stages. I am delighted to take 2nd and 1st in class and obviously to be leading the championship is brilliant! I’m really looking forward to the Isle of Man now and hopefully pushing for a win!”.

Callum will next be competing on the Isle of Man Rally on 9th / 10th June. It is another BRC Challenge round where Callum will try stretch his lead of the championship.

Callum is:

1st in BRC Challenge
1st in BRC Challenge Class
1st in BRC Challenge Junior
